“The beginnings of this song came from the first song I ever wrote, called “Fear.” Growing up with dyslexia and some learning challenges, Satan used that in my life to keep me very small and very afraid to ever try anything, to ever leap out of my boat and do something that I knew I couldn’t do. I’m learning that God often puts us in the position to do the unthinkable knowing we’re not able to. God’s not intimidated by what intimidates me and if I can just understand that all He wants me to do is obey him and that the things that scare me, don’t scare Him. This was the first song Steven and I wrote on together, and he pulled out that chorus of ‘voice of truth.’”
Written by Mark Hall, Casting Crowns
Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I'm in
On to the crashing waves
To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown
Where Jesus is
And He's holding out His hand
But the waves are calling out my name
And they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again
"Boy, you'll never win!
You'll never win!"
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I would choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes
To stand before a giant
With just a sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound
Of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand
But the giant's calling out my name
And he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again
"Boy you'll never win!
You'll never win!"
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
The voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I would choose to listen and believe
I would choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
The voice of truth

Hahaahha. I'm not too bright today. Great post!
Listen to this song several times a day. I spoke at a youth retreat many years ago, about stepping out of the boat. This song really touches my heart. I have another whole retreat built in my mind built entirely around this song. About facing the impossible, standing up against the face of those who want to drag you down. The worlds wants to bring all of us Christians down. We must CONSTANTLY be reminded that we need to listen and believe. Peter only sank into the water when he took his eyes off of Jesus. The stone that took down Goliath was smooth, formed by God at creation for that particular purpose to slay the Giant.
The waves and giants in our lives are constant. But keeping our eyes and heart upon a God who is greater. Life is not easy, but the victory is ours. Just think when we get back in the boat after the storm and see the giant dead with only a smooth stone, that we could not do it, but God was able because He is able.
People laugh when we get out of the boat, the want us to stay in our fort and not fight. But we can't win if we dont allow God to shine in our lives. Thank you for this song. this song rocks my world every day.
I heard Casting Crowns play this at Kingfest in June. I hadn't heard it before. When Mark talked about the back story, "Dyslexia on one hand, ADD on the other," I felt like he was talking directly to me. I have a son with high functioning autism and a daughter with serious ADHD; add that to my own ADHD and we have some very interesting and creative things going on in our very disorganized house. And this song reminded me not to be distracted by the naysayers and do my best helping my kids learn to live in the world relying on God's word and relying on Him to give them strength. Thank you, Mark & Steven & all of Casting Crowns for this uplifting song.
Jesus is truth, so when you hear the voice of Jesus, you are hearing the truth, don't question his voice, just trust and obey him, He will not put to shame those who obey his voice
